*UPDATE: Since writing this post, I’ve come to realize how important this book is. I am now a vegan and fully support this book (and PETA). The cover and feel of the book may be misleading, but they got the message out to the mainstream. And, they must have converted hundreds of people to veganism — saving thousands of animals. It is NOT okay to disrespect, violate and torture animals for a burger or a fancy latte. NOT okay.
**UPDATE: Again, I started eating vegan pretty much because of this book — and after I saw the infamous Meet Your Meat video. Since seeing that video, I haven’t been able to look at milk (even when my son drinks it) without thinking of the cows, of their calves. The least I can do in this case is give thanks (because it is not my choice to make my kids vegan – and that’s for another post). ANYWAY, Skinny Bitch is a great introduction to veganism, but the diet’s a little restrictive and relies too heavily on processed soy products, like meat substitutes — which I don’t think are healthy because of the isolated soy protein in them, and because they’re processed. And, the Skinny Bitch authors would agree. I’ve read interviews where they’ve said their diet and cookbooks are designed to help people transition smoothly into veganism.
I am so sick, Gorgeouses. Like, ewww.
But, I’ll be a’iight. Just sitting in my bed. Three pillows behind my back, a dosing wheezy rascal and a pile of used-up Kleenex by my side, and a humming humidifier giving us both a smidgen of relief.
I’m also so attractive right now? You don’t even KNOW. My hair’s pulled back in a sloppy bun. Nose is running, red from all the blowing (shut it, pervs — I’m in NO MOOD). Jaw is agape, lips dry and cracking from the dreaded mouth breathing. Eyes red with bags, and (speaking of bags) braless, in uggers oversized shirt. Doesn’t get more attractive than THAT, eh? (Did I just say “eh”?) I’d post a picture of myself, but I don’t want you to get all mad at me if your life is never the same again because of it….
Just like my life will never be the same since reading Skinny Bitch: A No-Nonsense, Tough-Love Guide for Savvy Girls Who Want to Stop Eating Crap and Start Looking Fabulous. (How was THAT for segue of the century!?)

Like any other unsuspecting girlie girl on the planet, I thought this was going to be a cute, light “chick” read. I mean, look at the cover! And…, the TITLE!
But, NOOoooOOOOooo! It was NOT. This was a DIATRIBE, Gorgeouses — a DARK DIATRIBE — against everyone from the USDA to the dairy and meat industries to what the authors call the “selfish whores who eat veal”! How am I supposed to look at my meat-eating husband again, or even FEED my monkeys, if I’m going to buy everything they say in this book — let alone consume ANYTHING with ANY TRACE of animal product in it WHATSOEVER?
I’m telling you: if I don’t put this book down NOW, it’s liable to hurl me headfirst into the ABYSS OF INSANITY (which, as you probably suspect by now, I’m already on the edge of)!
Sigh, anyway, while it’s good that the book opened my eyes even wider to the HORRORS that occur in the slaughterhouses, it sucks that I can’t STOP THEM. The only thing I can do is, once and for all, to turn completely vegetarian.
Even vegetarian is no good, though, for authors Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin (no wonder they’re bitchy!). They want the world to go VEGAN. And, I’ve been toying with the idea because the authors are MEAN (“bitchy”?)!
But, I can’t live life without cheese. And, since Skinny Bitch says that the dairy industry is just as evil as the meat industry, I’ve decided I will spend my life savings on ORGANIC dairy and eggs from here on in. And, now I’ll SHUT THE DAMN BOOK FOREVER. (If I don’t, I’m liable to give up everything sweet in life: I actually had a decaf green tea instead of my beloved Starbucks Grande Soy No-Wather Tazo Chai Latte yesterday, BECAUSE THEY SAID SO, and my day sucked.)
My one saving grace right now is that I hear the Skinny Bitches are in cahoots with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) — a CUTTHROAT animal activist organization. It’s a very one-sided diatribe, that Skinny Bitch. And, I’ve heard some TERRIBLE, HYPOCRITICAL things about PETA (*edit: I have no idea where these stories came from, nor do I believe they’re true) lately, which I hope aren’t true because that would disturb me almost as much as the horrific slaughterhouse stories I’ve spent my weekend crying over.
Am I rambling? I think I’m rambling. Maybe time to check the feeeeeever again….
Sigh…. At least the animals in MY house are happy — one thing I CAN control….
I went downstairs THREE times today. Twice for orange juice and tea with honey, and once for something Skinny Bitch would HANG me for — starts with “coo” and ends with “kies.” Anyway, this is what I saw:
First trip downstairs:

Second trip downstairs:

Third trip downstairs:

My poor, poor brown sweater…!
As for Skinny Bitch…. While I pledge to do my part in fighting animal cruelty in the slaughterhouses and helping to save the environment (important causes for ME) by going vegetarian* and by supporting the organic farm companies,** CHEATY DOES NOT RECOMMEND SKINNY BITCH (EDIT: Cheaty now recommends it, with the caveats in the updates above). It’s dangerous, potentially eating-disorder promoting, and it’s just plain darkly and horrifically far from what it presents itself to be.
*Alas, I cannot impose vegetarianism on my children. I WILL cook organic poultry and fish (sticks) for them.
**Alas, I WILL give up chai teas during the week so that I can buy organic foodstuff without denting my “pocketbook” (does ANYONE say “pocketbook” anymore?). Decaf green tea will take some getting used to, and maybe a few bad-mood posts here for a while, but it’s for a good cause and, me-hears, a very healthy alternative.

That catchy cover even enticed me to flip through it and luckily my friend said she didn’t want me to be a bitch and made me walk away. Had no idea it was so harsh & dark. Just don’t get that from the cover now do you??? I am living my life decaffeinated now incase that’s what keeps waking the baby and have found white tea, naturally a bit sweeter that green tea… from the same plant… okay, I add a weeeeee bit o sugar too. I’m a sugaroholic what can I say.

I am not very knowledgeable about organic farming, either than I am lead to believe that it is chemical/hormone, etc. free. But does the label of orgnanic mean that the animals are raised and kept in better conditions ?
I am thinking about buying a share in a community organic farm. The conditions that the animals live in are good ! The produce is natural !
I live in a more northern part of the country than you so this option MUST be available in Southern Ontario. I would think that you might be interested, were such an option available.
Beck April 14th, 2008 at 6:43 am
I know plenty of dairy farmers. PLENTY. Their cattle – as far as my experience goes – are treated very, very nicely. My father is a beef farmer and his cattle have lovely, free-roaming lives. If you want to be a vegetarian, fine, but it is totally possible to buy milk and eggs and cheese from cattle and chickens who were free range and nicely treated – just look around. And recent studies suggest STRONGLY that raising children on a low fat, high fiber diet stunts their growth and can cause intellectual impairments. Children raised vegan have much higher rates of neural tube defects, for example.

I’m getting worried about your getting sick so often – or does it just seem that way? Anyhow, I hope you’re feeling better soon. Love the pics of the kitties taking turns on your sweater — too cute! And re the Skinny Bitch book – they are mean! I read the first page of the ‘slaughterhouse’ chapter and had to stop — it’s so horrible how animals are treated – I had no idea.

I worked on a Quebec dairy farm during a french immersion program in university… the cows were loved. They had lots of room to roam. Their living quarters were clean. Their pictures hung on the walls of the office. These cows were like a part of the family for the brothers who ran the farm. I really enjoyed working with them. Happy cows produce more milk.

Have you read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle? I really enjoyed that book and it was about some of the things you talked about, but nicer. Although they are far from vegetarians. There is one chapter in the book you should probably skip that describes how to butcher a turkey. (Although they are very humane about it, of course.) There is even a chapter that teaches you to make cheese, which is supposed to be suprisingly easy. So, anyway, maybe you should check that out too.
Hope everyone feels better very, very soon.

not sure what happened but I hit a button and off went something…so I will REPEAT myself…”stop complaining and take those cats out for a walk” [JUST KIDDING] … perhaps they are competing for cuteness with MINDEN…ok, now a story. I had a “To Do” list that was 3 pages long (really) and it was so stressing me out that I finally tossed it out BECAUSE I thought what is important I will remember and the rest well…can’t be that important. My psychiatrist at the time thought I had fallen on my head…but then she could see how much calmer I became (she did say I was a little backwards but hey I have always been called a little weird and take it as a compliment). So, the moral of that story is…STICK to one BOOK, one DIET or you will eventually be too full of information and not able to apply any of it…trust me been there and done that with Kalin. I had every book and website and its circle of links on Autism …it only stressed me. Just a suggestion. Take care of you.
Piecake April 14th, 2008 at 11:47 am
I recently skimmed a book about eating naturally and there was a section about eating vegan (against it). According to the author, there are no societies with a history of a vegan diet while there are many that are vegetarians. She had some other points about why a vegan diet isn’t good, but I don’t remember them all. The book was very dry, but had many interesting facts. If you want to check it out (at the library, I wouldn’t buy it), the title is “Real Food: What to Eat and Why” by Nina Planck.
Hope you feel better soon!
P.S. Thanks for leaving a comment on my blog! The dye for the Chicago River is a secret, but it’s vegetable based and been tested to make sure it doesn’t harm the water or the creatures in it.

Hi Haley-O! I read skinny bitch last summer…and LOVED LOVED LOVED it! It became my bible… I actually agree with everything they say and if I had the willpower (which I DON’T) I would definately go completely vegan. I’ve only made it to giving up meat, caffeine, most dairy and all things white (sugar, flour, rice). I can’t seem to give up eggs, fish or cheese (mmmmmmmmmmm brie!) though so I just cut back severely on them and I feel pretty fricken’ good about just taking what I did from the book and leaving the extreme rest to those crazy (but skinny) chicks.
You’re already doing SO many things right by yourself and your family – don’t stress about doing more.

Regarding Vegan’s…
I’ve often wondered if they have considered what the results of their efforts to convert the world would be if they succeeded.
Holstien Cows and Bulls would become almost extinct. Think about it. Have you ever seen a dairy cow in the wild?
If as a planet we stopped drinking cow milk what would happen to all those cows? Who would take care of them?
Sure some might go to a zoo, but zoos can’t take them all. They have been so domesticated that they would never survive in the wild if we set them free. And where would we set them free?
The way to help dairy cows is to support small farmers. Do what we can as a society to do away with the large farmers who treat their cows more like commodities. Most small farmers really do their best to take care of their cows. They are an investment. They usually have kids who are showing some of them and treating them as pets. Yes at some point they will have to decide to let the cow go to the slaughter house, but at least they will have had a relatively pleasant life along the way.
Of course… milk prices will go up…

Hey! I picked the book up to read the animal chapter – but I couldn’t do it! Didn’t want to cry in public =)…I have been a vegetarian for years, but am thinking of becoming a vegan. Its just so hard since we are so limited as is!
Julia July 9th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
I’ve read the book numerous times and loved it. I love how being passionate about a topic can be translated as “mean”. I don’t understand how the horrid slaughterhouse stories can be attributed to the authors… don’t shoot the messengers! You can live in ignorance (and not give a shit what you put into your body) or you can know the truth about how that steak made it’s way onto your plate. The truth hurts– if you don’t like it or it bothers you, maybe you just DO something about it?
Julia July 9th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
*just = should
Julia July 9th, 2008 at 3:20 pm
*And not all animals are mistreated on the farms where they are raised– but most animals are NOT slaughtered here. They are sent to slaughterhouses. The cows pictures may have been hanging on their walls, have been treated kindly through life, but at the end of the die– they shipped them off to be slaughtered for their own buck. Let’s not kid ourselves here.
Haley-O July 9th, 2008 at 6:34 pm
I’ve since gone almost completely vegan because I keep coming across horror stories. I’m only “shooting the messenger” because of the way they’ve designed and promoted the book. But, I guess this is a way to get the book to the mainstream audience it needs….
Thank you for being passionate for a cause that’s extremely important to me.

Any of you who posted comments about how you will NOT be reading Skinny Bitch now because of this post need to reread it and realize that it is now reccommending it! I recently read this book and am now altering my lifestyle and food choices to be as vegan as possible. It is a difficult read at some points as it discusses in detail many horrifying stories about slaughterhouses, etc. [Mind you, they do give you a warning about them in advance so you can choose not to read them...] Anyways, I honestly feel so much happier, healthier and just generally better about myself, my life, and how my choices affect others [including our animal friends!]. It is an AMAZING book and I would recommend it to ANYONE. I mean you should at least give it a try. It reveals so many things about the meat/poultry/dairy industries that you would have nooo idea about otherwise! It’s amazing, and gives you great tips and advice on a new and healthier lifestyle. GIVE IT A CHANCE! You will not be a ‘skinny bitch’! Well, maybe skinny hehe, but definitely NOT a bitch! It’s amazingggggggg.
Skinny Bitch August 9th, 2009 at 10:36 am
Hey guys!!!
I finshed reading the book ya the chapter that you read about the meat is a little out there but if you sat down and read it, it makes sence. Even if you don’t become a veggie it still gives you good informationb so read it instead of bashing it toy may like it like i did. Don’t juge it from that one chapter.
Rhett June 18th, 2011 at 11:17 pm
That was a the best fictional story i have ever read. No truth to any of it. These animal right extremists will try lead you to believe that all animals are abused. I guarantee you that there is more abuse done person to person, than person to animal in this world. Ranchers are great people that care and respect every single one of there animals. As for where they got their references in the book, most come again from extremist animal right organizations, such as the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), do not mix them up with the Humane Society. The Humane Society is a great organization, the HSUS runs commercials on all the networks, and gives none of the money to shelters or anything. This book sicken me like many, but it was because of all the BS. Every page had a supposed source, and a dark story, but none of their facts were true. Cattle under 30 months of age make up 85-90% of cattle slaughtered in a year. Cattle under 30 months do not get BSE or mad cow disease, however they want you to believ that all cattle should be tested. If the authors would only have use their imaginations to write a happier story their work would have gone down as the greatest fictional story of all time. Such imagination, put to a waste. Maybe they can write the next starwars movie. LIES Lies Lies.
People be a leader and not a follower. Open your eyes.

BE CAREFUL... January 26th, 2012 at 12:35 am
I am very pro and for vegan and vegetarian and being more aware of what your eating. But this book isn’t the best way to make going vegan good. If it’s making people start to develop eatting disorters, I don’t see how that would ever be good or healthy. If your soo skinny how will you know when it’s too much? My sister and me started to be vegetarian at around the same time. It’s great to know that your starting to be concerned with what your eating but after a while I felt it got old being limited it’s not alway easy to go out with friends and have a good time to relax from your stressful life not being able to eat some food with your friends or family. I had decided that I was going to quit being a vegetarian. But I know that you don’t need some book to inspire you if one does thats great, just don’t take it too seriously. Im not saying I agree with they way the food industry is now but dont fight fire with fire. I now eat a healthy balance of any food I feel called to eat, I have the freedom of having a few unhealthy meals a week but I usally am eating the same at home anyway. It’s the best of both you can’t expect to be perfect or you will just get mad and either eat a ton of junk foods. Or you could just be reasonably responsible for your self without needing to give yourself a label, who cares… Work out a few times a week, try to mainly stick to being vegetarian, but it’s not the end of the world to have some meals with some meat. My sister had read this book and probably some others simular to this one and she now has an eating disorter, its pretty scary to see considering that she was a very smart and strong minded person. But this book has twisted her into dismay she now doesn’t even know what shes doing in her life any more. I don’t have normal contact with her anymore and she sounds like she could have an emotional breakdown when ever I talk to her. It’s sad that a once 4.0 student is now suffering because of the way this book makes or trys to make you think. I can see how it can be a good book, but it’s not for someone who isn’t able to see the power of self-serving bias. If you look at this book as a overly bitchy view on eating, lol. Then I think youll be ok, but if your looking at it like the bible then this isn’t a book for you. Just be careful, and do what ever you know is best for you! Who cares what you do so long as you are happy and stive to be best not break down obsessing over food.
