That white thing, bottom left? That’s my chest. Ma BEWB (a term I can’t take credit for). Everything ON TOP of ma bewb is the reason I haven’t been sleeping lately, the reason I have this massive headache, burning eyes and inability to write sensical sentences (see?). Apparently “sensical” isn’t a word. But IT SHOULD BE.
Don’t worry, the cat is mid yawn — not mid hiss or vampire bite — in the photo. He’s very friendly, as you know. But apparently very tired. Because apparently 22 hours of sleeping isn’t enough for him.
Apparently.
So, here’s the thing. Neither of my kids are sleeping — or, at least, not at the same time. It starts with the Rascal, at around 2am. He wakes up screaming for “MAMA! MAMA! MAMA! MAMA! MA-…” If I don’t go and get him, then a) his sister will wake up, and b) he will continue to scream until dawn. I. Exaggerateth. Not.
Sensical.
So, when I can’t take the screaming anymore (the acoustic sitch in my house does NOT help), I pick him up out of his crib — she wakes up anyway — and I plop him and his “Mooneh” and his “Bah” and his “Er-Er” all down on my bed with me. He settles right down, of course, impishly grinning ear to ear….
This would be all sweet and precious and cuddly if not for one itty bitty problemo.
He doesn’t exactly sleep WITH me — he sleeps ON me. As in, ON TOP of me. As in, SEE ABOVE PHOTO in which he was courteous enough, JUST THIS ONCE, to let Minden have a bewb.
Bewb.
Usually, he’s sprawled across my torso like a dead fish. A snoring dead fish. When I can’t breathe anymore, I attempt to shift positions, and he kvetches and repositions himself in the Snoring Dead Fish pose across my torso — again, but with a little more GUSTO.
Snoring Dead Fish.
By 4am the Monkey’s in our bed. I usually hear her thump thump thumping across the hall to our bed, and I attempt to “SIGHHH” underneath the solid mass of Rascal — and then she tells us she’s thirsty.
By 6am, the Rascal’s tugging my hand and yelling, “UP!”
I used to make fun of people who said “muchly.” But, I’m tired. So tired. So damn MUCHLY tired. Gusto.

My dog likes to sleep between my legs with her head on one leg and spread out over the others. It makes sleep quite hard if I don’t want to disturb her. This is why I take lots of naps.

The last two days, about 5 minutes after I arrive home from work, my son wakes up from his “nap”. I pick him up, sit with him in my arms in a recliner, and he proceeds to sleep in “dead fish pose” on me for another HOUR.

I empathize but have no advice. I didn’t sleep well again until this very year, older son at 5, younger one at 2.5. I must say it feels great & you will get there but even now I am always tired…feel like I must make up for the 5 years of sleep I missed.

I have some really bad advice to give you. But it is what worked for me (sorta, my 4 year old still comes into our room 4 out of 7 nights a week). When M was 1.5 years old I went through that crying all night long thing. And I gave up. I put a bed in his room and sides on it and got rid of the crib. He loved being in his own bed and our sleep got much better. For the first year or so I would go to his bed and sleep with him when he woke in the night. Now he comes to me. But not always. Like I said, this is probably terrible advice, but desperate times…

Nathan has his immunizations yesterday so I have been in the same boat, sleeping with my kid, laying on me! My legs and back are sore from lack of moving. I just keep telling myself, this will be over soon enough….

time for some detective work here…
why is Rascal waking at 2am? Is he too hot? Is he too cold? Would he be happy sleeping with something that has your scent on it (a blanket that you sleep with perhaps?) Although it seems to me that he needs to hear your heartbeat & breathing. I wonder if a recording might work.
For Darly I found that she was just getting cold at night…so I got her a heated mattress pad (like an electric blanket you sleep on top of) she couldn’t kick it off like she did her blankets. It helped us so much. Darly still has temperature issues at night but thankfully she’s now old enough to deal with them herself.
well the one good thing is that eventually they will both outgrow this. a need that is met is a need that goes away. Hugs and prayers!

Girl! I feel your pain. This is my house. Thank GOD for the King size bed. The problem with us is my 20 month old daughter. She wakes up screaming for mommy or daddy every night – we do get the odd night where she doesn’t, usually every 8 days or so – this happens as early as 10:30, 1 am or 3 am…on lucky days it’s at 6 am and she sleeps on me until 7:30. The only way she goes back to sleep is on top of me! My back, neck and arms all hurt and I am so exhausted, I have a really hard time forming complete thoughts, nevermind sentences – this is so not helping my work sitch. She does’t wake up the 4 year old bro every night but sometimes I hear him shout out and he RUNS into my room and climbs into bed. In theory the family bed sounds nice, but let me tell you that I think it’s really crappy. Every night when I go to bed (if I’m alone) I pray to God that I will get a full nights sleep or at least 6 hours without a child on top of me or sharing my pillow. There is always a cat in my bed, on top of my legs or at my feet, this I don’t mind so much, only sometimes (I have to admit) that I kick her off of me and she just gets right back on. *BIG SIGH*Just know that you’re not the only one. I guess we just need to ride it out…

This sounds like a night at my house minus the screaming. Julia still sleeps with us and 4 out of 7 nights Lucas will sneak in at some point. I can’t wait to move her out of our bed.
Thank God for king size beds!
Good Luck & Happy Thanksgiving!

Well, as Dina said, thank God for kingsize beds!
Although neither of my kids ever slept ON me!
Well, they’ll grow up soon enough and won’t always want to sleep with you. The boy didn’t leave our room until he was 4.5 (when baby sister came along) and the girlie just really started sleeping all night in her own bed about 6 months ago. And all because of the canopy/net from IKEA. $14.99 and a pass to an almost good night’s sleep (she still comes to our bed at about 6 AM for a snuggle).
Good luck, Hales…happy T-giving weekend!

Good luck with that Haley! I don’t know how you do it!! I’m taking drastic measures and sleeping in the spare room in the basement tonight just to get 6 uninterrupted hours (with my husband taking over). But we have a four month old who after teasing me with 8 hours of sleep a night for 6 weeks has taken to getting up every 2 to 3 hours. Again, I don’t know how you do it! Not getting more than 3 hours (sometime four but it’s rare) of sleep in a row for days on end is more than this prairie girl can take!

I have been reading a few posts on here and have picked up some great info. One thing I have found which works well for a good nights sleep, feeling more relaxed and focused is binaural beats. As strange as they may sound (excuse the pun) they are a very powerful method of relaxation.
