Do they actually say that in the country — “Howdy”? — because I haven’t heard it since I’ve been here. Although I have woken up to the sound and scent of cows, and I drove about a half a kilometre sitting next to a container of worms….

Yes…they do say “Howdy!” And they also say “y’all!” And the plural of “y’all” which is “all y’all!”

Well now. Grew up in country type setting. Cows in pasture across the road and all that. Can’t say I recall hearing “Howdy” all that often. Or driving around with worms for that matter. Guess it depends on where you are.
