They are perfectionists who despise carelessness and incoherence in others. However, as critical as they are of others, they usually turn that criticism inwards on themselves. They dislike being criticised by others because they already know their own faults.
Virgos have the tendency to be as overly critical of others as they are of themselves. They can be seen as petty and are often skeptical of the ideas of others. They are worriers, which may lead them to be hypochondriacs. Their constant need for perfection can wear on others.
— from Explore Astrology
I’m thinking of changing my Astrological Sign. Because I really really really hate being a Virgo. I tell this to people all the time. When they ask me, “So, what’s your sign?”, I always GROOAAAN. “Virgo,” I say, “the worst sign.”
I know I should probably have a better attitude toward my sign because, like my height, I may not like it but there’s nothing I can do about it. I might as well embrace it.
But how to “embrace” this perfectionism that — come on you see it! — plagues me and my fellow Virgins (heh)! Why can’t I be all careless and just go with the flow and drink diet Pepsi and cook with Teflon pans and drink bottled water and sleep in and eat BON BONS without THE GUILT and self-beRATING? WHY, Gorgeouses, WHY?
Every week I try to quit CHAI TEA LATTES this and quit GOING TO BED AT 2am that. Maybe if I just stopped trying to quit things and BE PERFECT and live up to what really are UNATTAINABLE IDEALS, I’d stop obsessing about and DESIRING these things?
It’s hard being a Virgo. And, perfectionism is the WORST trait ever. It’s so vain.
I’m trying to teach my daughter to love herself, trying to cultivate her self-esteem. How to do that if I have NONE! If I’m so hard on myself every freaking day?
Sigh. I guess it’s my lot in life, though. It’s in the stars, the cards…. I guess the healthiest thing I can do, really, is to just embrace my perfectionism, not to expect SO MUCH from myself, AND try to let things go. In the spirit of this CHALLENGE, then, here are 13 DOABLE changes I’d like to make in my own time, with no pressure, when I’m ready…. Check it!

Image c/o Blue Star Chronicles.
1. I would really LOVE to quit caffeine. It’s simply not good for my anxiety-prone constitution. I LOVE the way it feels, though, WHILE I’m drinking it. But, like, right after I drink it, I crasheth…. BANG. MESS. I hear green tea has a different KIND of caffeine…. Maybe I’ll drink more of that, and less black tea…CHAI…?

But, in the words of it’sgrandma, it’s so darn BORING….
2. I REEEEEALLY wish I could get to bed early. 11pm. I could sleep until 6am (when Rascal wakes up), and then do work in the peace and quiet of morning….

I hear it’s MUCH healthier to go to bed before midnight and wake up early, than it is to go to bed late and wake up late…. (It’s just that I’ve always ALWAYS been most productive late at night…ALWAYS!)
3. I need to stop wearing THESE in public….

But, NEED new shoes! NEED cute sandals! But, cute sandals must be comfortable on my (wide) achy dancer’s feet!
4. MORE YOGA! I’d love to be able to practice daily, like I used to….

…another reason why it’d be great to wake up earlier…. I’d also love to try new teachers, new studios, workshops. Maybe when the kids are a little older?
5. Finish books that I start…. Or, at least read ONE book at a time and not 20. Currently, am reading these:
…There are more, but I’m too lazy to post ALL of them…. These are the main ones.
6. I’d like to start buying more vegetables….

…and EATING THEM. I’ve been buying kale lately. And, basically, it sits in my fridge until it rots. Must ask Lori, our resident nutritionist, for kale recipe….
8. Drink more water….

…But not bottled water — bad for the environment….
9. I NEED to go on more dates ALONE with the hubby….

…seriously…. We need to make dates a regular thing, like weekly. Everyone needs a little romance in their lives….
10. I NEEEEEED to buy new bras…THAT FIT!

…I think I’ll try the BIG Bravado bra. It may not be purty, but we all know I need MAYJAH boob support these day. Will go TOMORROW…maybe. All the celebrities are using Bravado…, so SO MUST I!
11. I’d love to carve out some more time to relax and read blogs….

…and to comment. I often read blogs on my pinkberry, like, when I’m nursing. And, I can’t comment on the pinkberry. Commenting is important. Shows people you’re reading…. Who doesn’t love a comment!? So, I feel self-indulgent getting lots of lovely comments and not always giving back….
12. I’d love to be able to spend more time with my cats….

…Not YOU, Mmmmminden — who’s ALWAYS IN MY FACE (LOVE). But, the other two. I’m thinking MARGE! and Tigger need more loving…. Minden takes it all. But, he and I are soul mates….
13. Must make more time for PLAY. I take myself WAY too seriously. MUST learn to relax and to play more….

Illustration, with thanks, c/o Keri Smith.
Your turn, Gorgeouses…. What small changes would you LIKE to make in your life? It’s always good to write them down…. A good, doable, no-pressure first step….

I prefer Pilates and meditation better than yoga hehehe. And yeah, I agree with you and having a date out with hubby. I’d love to have a date out with him once every other week.
I really need a breather too.

Crap, so THAT is why I am so nit-picky .. ya, I’m ‘blessed’ to be a Virgo too!
With both of us working full-time .. perfectionism has to take a back seat, although I do struggle ‘everyday’ with not having my house perfect etc…
Hm.. small changes .. probably being able to do my Pilates every day, and running, every day. It’s impossible though, with kids soccer two nights a week, a husband to feed, a dog to walk and flowers to water .. yikes …feeling the stress! Hmm.. probably I’d like to (and should!) add meditation to my day, but absolutely NO idea how to start. Ideas?

I would like to be less weight obsessed. I still want to be healthy and exercise, etc. But, I would like to stop basing my personal value on the number on the scale.
I gave my scale away on the weekend (I almost cried), and I only weigh myself once per week at Weight Watchers. But, I really, really don’t want to pass that obsession on to my kids, especially chloe.
Don’t hate me, but I don’t believe in birth signs. I’m a taurus, but I couldn’t tell you what that even means.

OMG!
I am married to a Virgo and my brother is a Virgo; I know exactly what you’re talking about. It must be tough to be you, LOL - just kidding, Virgos are incredibly creative and kind people, they have always been able to motivate me (when they’re not getting on my nerves, that is…)
When I saw your list of books, I was LMAO! I am reading two of them at the moment, plus a few more that take turns collecting dust next to my night stand.
The changes you’d like to implement are pretty realistic (not sure about the caffeine though…); why don’t you try one at a time and give yourself a time frame?

ok, is it wrong to steal all of yours b/c they totally apply to me too? I am a caffeine fiend as well who stays up until the wee hours. it is the only time I feel like I can get anything done without the fear of a child waking up or needing something. and yoga? would love to do everyday. (sigh)
the big one for me is sugar. I need to stop stuffing my pie hole with cookies! I am going to work on just that one this week.

when I got rid of my “to do” list it was the best thing ever for me. I just kept adding to it and never scratching off…so what I remember must be important and the rest well too bad. You will do the things that need doing ’cause they are the important one….feeding da’ baby, changing his butt, taking them for walks to the park…ALL other things will always be there for later. Trust me!! Remember I have a 20 year old, 18 year old, 16 year old and 14 year old….I cant believe it! time does fly

I don’t even know where to start, so many things could change. But then I like things the way they are too…
BTW I am sure you have this store in your area, http://www.teaopia.ca/
Check it out, they have a ton of varieties of Green tea with little extras. I like the green tea with the strawberries and currants. They also have chai tea which would be better for you than a late. Not as tasty though.

I LOVE being a Virgo! We get sh*t DONE, man!!
Baby step it out! Small, managable steps every day…
That said…I need to exercise (I’d say more, but would be saying that I do some…)
Cut out sugar
Get up early
Lose 30 pounds (but that is because I quit smoking a few years back and haven’t been the same since)

Oh I so know what your going though!! Even though I am not a virgo…I too have these ideals of being the best that I can be and yes, quite frankly a perfectionist. Yes, doable lists are the best. I have a little note book that I jot everything into. In this book I write out my daily to do’s from phone calls to grocery lists. This little book also contains things I want to accomplish on a personal level like take more photos, do more acupuncture, Pilates and Yoga. My little book even includes lists like music I want to add to my itunes, books that I want to read (i’ve got three books from your reading list on mine as well) and websites that I want to check out. Sometimes I’ll even write out places I want to travel to.
A big definite ‘to do’ on my list is a sweet date with my honey husband…much needed! Good luck and enjoy all your doables!!

Why oh why do you have do you have to give up Chais? It just doesn’t make any sense to me. Why?
Go to your nearest Whole Foods or health food store and buy some STASH Organic Chai Black & Green Tea, mix with Agave Nector - you can buy it at Loblaws and some lovely Silk - there you go VEGAN GREEN CHAI-LATTE - don’t give it up it’s just too wonderful. If you want a green tea that doesn’t taste like cardboard buy the PC Organic Jasmine Green Tea, tastes much better. Aaaahhh. Have your Chai and Green tea too.
Oh and if you want to ditch some of the caffeine double brew your tea. Put your tea in your cup, pour hot water, let sit for 1 min. dump out the water and brew again.
Yes, I agree the crocks have to go darling, really they must.

But I’m okay with that.
Great 13 list today. I hope you achieve them. My list is up too, eh!
I don’t drink coffee or tea and very little Diet Coke. I do drink a lot of water. I’m not big on veggies so there’s rarely any in our fridge. I wear my Crocs outside … I just love ‘em! I rarely have more than one book on the go … I have to finish one before I start another. I’m just like that. I need more bras too … mine are getting old

Multi-tasking Mommy said on June 27th, 2008 at 8:26 am
I have the same values for my daughter–teaching her self esteem and confidence (two things that I never had and I struggle with every.single.day).
I purposely go out of my way to comment to her about how beautiful she is (no matter what), how thoughtful she is, making good choices etc.etc. Sometimes, I wonder if I am going overkill the other way!
I grew up with my Dad criticizing my every move (from showering to clothing to what I ate) and I refuse to have my daughter feel like she lives under a microscope (although it’s hard to do when she’s 3, as we are so responsible still for their choices).
My Mom criticized (and still does, argh) every decision I made/make and this caused me to grow up with very low self esteem/confidence in my decision making skills. Result? I can’t make a decision for the life of me.
I think that how we grow up and the flaws that we see in ourselves plays a HUGE role in how we choose to raise our children. And yes, it is difficult, but so worth it to make the changes that we saw as flaws in our upbringing/ourselves.
WHEW! LONG COMMENT–sorry about that!

You’re wearing Crocs?! Let’s go shopping together! DSW perhaps? As for kale, here’s a yummy easy recipe: blend in strong blender: 1c spinach, 1c kale, and 2 bananas.
Changes I would like to make include decreasing the bulimia, getting responsible with money, and working towards college graduation.

Try some of the other styles of Crocs. The “Alice” style looks more like a Mary Jane and is still very comfy. As for me I need to take things slower. This Virgo like most others tries to do too much. With a 20-month old, a full time professional job, studying for my professional license, and teaching classes at the Uni there is no time for me. I really need to work on that!
Thanks for all you do Haley, this blog helps keep me motivated to take a few moments for myself!

My parents must have lied to me. I don’t think I am born in October, I must be a Virgo too !
Aaargh perfectionist? me? yes!
turning that criticism inturnally? me? yes!
being hurt by the slightest comment by others? me? yes!
Getting anxiety problems and stress as a result? Me? yes!
Pfff
so cafeine is bad for us eh? Damn. I can’t quit cafeine either. But I do try to limit myself to 2 cups of coffee a day (and some coke maybe). In the afternoons at work I switch to tea and I do avoid all black tea. I drink green tea (boring maybe but once you got used to it is relieves the thirst so much better and it is less bitter than black tea)…but try to drink even more pure herbal infusions.
hahaha and going to bed at time is so hopeless for me (hence why I need the coffee in the morning , hence why I eternally complain about being tired).
it’s such a struggle to do the right things even when we know what we should do!
