I come home from the appointment with head down, back hunched, toes dragging on the wet grass and up the wood steps to back door. I open the door to find Josh: “shhh, he’s actually sleeping.” “Good, I say, because I’m a terrible mother.”
See, brillers BRAND NEW NUTRITIONIST (LOVE!) says I need to CHANGE MY EATING WAYS before I become OBESE, develop diabetes and, eek, create bad eating habits among my innocent little fledglings. MONKEY LOVES HER SOME SUGAH!
Before you hit the comment button to tell me I’m being RIDICULOUS (again) and all crazy-intense (again) and hard on myself (again) and self-critical (again) — you know me so well — and HELLOOOO NURSING STILL?…. I know. I’m being anxious and ridiculous, and Nutritionist didn’t really mean to trigger the tumbling-down of my fragile emotional infrastructure when she told me the errors of my eating ways. But, just, like, WAAAAHHHH! I don’t WANT to quit my Starbucks soy/nonfat no-water chai-tea latte (mmmm Staaaar-buuuucks), and WAAAAHHH! I HATE PROTEIN! And, WAAAAHHH! Was that scale right? And, WAAHHH! Monkey LIVES ON CARBS! And, WAAAAHHH! I need to lose this wei-hei-hei-height!
Perpetual smile (seriously I smile perpetually…am one of those smiley people) darkens into frown as Nutritionist hands me my plan.
It’s an excellent plan, and it’s sure to work. ALL my friends are THUPER enthusiastic about it because they’ve lost so much weight and feel totally satisfied. But, I’m completely carb-addicted. I’m like the Amy Winehouse of SUGAR and BAD CARBS. They’re my drug of choice. And kitties….

…and Rascal’s wee baby feet….

Seriously, though, as much as I’m being a big MAAMA baby about going on a real diet with a real HOLISTIC NUTRITIONIST kicking my arse, IT’S REALLY FREAKING NECESSARY.
As someone who’s pretty-much vegetarian, obsessed with buying organic foods to support environmentally-friendly small farmers, afraid of too much dairy, afraid of too much soy……….. I need help. And, I need it now before my anxieties about food get the better of me and ALL I eat are Starbucks nonfat/soy no-water chai-tea lattes (mmmmm, Staaaar-buuuucks) and I start to really hate myself.

In my yoga classes, I’ve been teaching my students a lot about balance. Balancing poses aren’t only about balance ON THE MAT, I tell them, but also balance OFF THE MAT…. The “tree pose,” for example, is both a mirror of your state of balance (emotional, physiological, etc.), and a tool for achieving it….

Illlustration c/o Hip Tranquil Chick.
Balancing my diet is an important first step toward achieving balance off the mat. And, balancing my diet involves balancing the body “chemistry” (to quote Nutritionist) by eating the proper balance of protein, carbohydrates and fats. Fun….
It’s not a diet, then. It’s yoga. Moderation. Responsibility. Healthy.
I have 40 pounds (ugh!) of pregnancy poundage to lose starting today. I will keep you posted on my progress, meal plans, recipes, etc., on CHEATY KITCHEN when I have more deets. For now, I’m just supposed to eat a “balanced” breakfast (in other words, NO CHAI) within an hour after waking up. I think I’ll have this (as recommended by Nutritionist):
1 pc Ezekiel bread
1 egg (scrambled)
1 oz low-fat cheese
1 apple or orange
green tea
Blech.
Wish me luck! And, please JOIN ME on my journey from FRUMP to FABULOUS! If Gwyneth Paltrow can do it, so can I! …Heh.
P.S.: Hey, Gorgeouses! If you want the picture of your choice beside your comment (instead of our cutie little monkey), please go to GRAVATAR.COM, sign up, and your picture will appear beside your comments — not just on my blogs, but on most of the blogs out there. LOVE….
P.P.S.: Have you entered the car-seat contest at Cheaty Goodies, yet?
P.P.P.S.: I’m getting a lot of questions about how you know if/when I update all of the other sites. Just so you know, Cheaty Monkey and Gossip are updated regularly, as always. For the other sites, you may want to scroll down to the bottom of the page to see lists of the most recent posts at each site. I will post at least 2-3 times weekly at Kitchen and Recommends, and when contests are announced or winners revealed at Goodies. Thanks for asking!

Oh girl…I feel your pain!
I’m a carb-o-holic myself. I think its just a battle we need to fight daily with all the hats we need to wear. Hang in girl! The weight will begin to drop off. Trust me! I felt like I’d never loose it and then…it just started to drop.

Sometimes a wake-up call is a good, good thing.
I’m soy-cautious, too, so I use lentils and beans and quinoa when I want to make something meatless. It’s totally possible to pump up your protein content without eating soy, although I hear ya – I don’t like protein foods, too, and as a result I have near-constant anemia. Awesome.
Good luck.

I’m so with you here.
I’m doing the same thing, but starting slowly. Well, to me it’s not slow but whatever.
Even just cutting dairy has been hard for me. And I’m trying to cut back on sugar, etc. Yet, still balance cause of the nursing thing.
It’s hard because a)people don’t realize how much those of us who love food get cranky and miserable from eating boring health food and b)because with kids it’s much much much easier to eat junk!

Happy belated holiday weekend Haley. Did I say I love your new look. It rocks. As with most people I want you to know I support you with your quest to be healthier. I truly believe it is all about moderation. You follow your new diet as best you can and treat yourself once in a while, cause Momma you deserve a treat. That breakfast didn’t sound half bad to me. Not only do we motivate you, but you motivate us! Thanks for that!

hang in there!
remember once you do something for three weeks, it becomes habit, so try this new plan for three weeks, and see how you feel.
you know what really worked for me? i read YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT by Gillian McKeith and i followed her plan, which is really a lifestyle, not a diet, and lost 20 pounds in one summer – of course now that i had a baby it’s a completely different story and i have 20 pounds to lose, again!
ariesbabe said, May 21st, 2008 at 10:31 am
ooops, i forgot one thing – the best way to make sure you get a few servings of fruit every day is to start the day with a smoothie (no milk or yogurt though, just fruits, water and almond milk for some added protein)
it really works and it does wonders to your energy level
Melissa said, May 21st, 2008 at 11:34 am
you can do it !! i am still in desperate need of losing some prego poundage (i think my little guy and rascal are pretty much the same age) but i’m working on it too. yay for PT’s! food is always a struggle…as i sit here and crack open a bag of NIBS licorice…mmm…yum

Ah, the baby feet – so freaking cute!
My youngest has recently developed a wee pot belly which I’m sure is a sign of him mimicking my eating habits. CARBS CARBS AND MORE CARBS! This has been a reality check that I need to replace our carb intake with fruits and veggies. We’ve already switched it up and I’m finding he’s falling to sleep super easy – must be related.
Good luck with your endeavours! We’re here for you.
Must go sign up to gravatar – although the monkey is cute too

I think there is nothing wrong with trying to eat properly as long as you are looking at it on a day to day basis. I did well today, or I could have done better today. Not, oh crap, I am eating too much sugar and now I am at risk for long term illness! None of that kind of thinking. NONE!
Good luck sweetie, I am with you on the carb addiction, I struggle with that often. I am learning to embrace protein. ugh.

i’m very big on the idea that you can eat well and stay healthy and still enjoy those things you love. like your chais. don’t deprive yourself of everything. it’s great that you want to lose weight and get healthy…but you can without sacrificing everything.
that’s what i do. but, then again, i don’t have the soy and meat issues.
hmph.

First off, was away for a few days – your place looks amazing! I love the green. Love it.
Second – I think you are probably heads and shoulders above most people’s idea of healthy already, so don’t be too hard on yourself. I know, because I’m the same way. At my house, I feel unhealthy if I don’t eat quinoa at least once a week. So I’m not giving up coffee.
Kate said, May 21st, 2008 at 3:46 pm
As you take it off (and you will take it off), I’m putting it on – 15 weeks pregnant! Don’t lose hope..and don’t give up everything you love..I think the key is having a great breakfast. It sounds like you are active anyway, what with 2 kids to chase and doing yoga…don’t beat yourself up!!!

A few years ago I went from 155 to 115 in a few months. It was painful and tiring and tasted awful, but man did it feel good. I’ve had a baby since then and am no longer obsessed with the scale, so I’ve certainly crept back to the middle of those two numbers…But it only takes a couple of days of eating right for me to get on board and want to keep going. I hope that is the same way with you. You’re gonna feel fabulous after a week of this and you’re going to be motivated to do another…and another. I’d LOVE to go on this journey with you…I started my diet (again) about a week ago. We’ll see how that goes.
I do love me some Ezekial bread. The hamburger buns are actually delicious.
Good luck!

I have never had to diet or exercise in my life…up until now. My energy is low far too often, I know my eating habits suck (many days I don’t eat anything except my morning coffee until 1pm then I binge late in the afternoon). While I don’t necessarily want to lose weight, I do want to be healthier, have more energy, sleep better, etc. and I think the first step is paying attention to what I put into (or don’t put into) my body. I look forward to your posts about your new ‘diet’ (naughty word).
Oh and I don’t know what Ezekial bread is…off to google now.
