Potty training. Both of my kids were done at about 2-1/2. I did nothing–my wife did all the work and they each took two weeks.
I know, and I’m the stay-at-home parent.

Hope you feel better soon… you sounded so great earlier…. all that yoga & exercise (Good for you!). I guess running on no sleep will finally catch up with you.
My tadpole looooves the Jolly Jumper as well. So nice to get him outta my arms/sling for a bit.
Took ages to train my 3-year-old. Had to wait till he was ready. Patience with a capital P!

we started working on DD when she was monkey’s age…but it took a long time for it to work. I blame all the moving. (when I say a long time…I mean a full year.) We tried everything. don’t sweat it.
I hope that you’re feeling better soon.

You’re hilarious. Will bounce for boobies!!! That was so my son too!
Anyway, as for the toilet training … don’t push it. Doodle wasn’t trained till he was a little over 3 and there were several girls in his class/age group who were also at that age.
When he was ready we totally knew and he did it in a weekend. It wasn’t any special thing we did – he just was ready and our only role was to remind him to pee.
My niece is the same age as the monkey and my sister is struggling with the same thing you are. She thinks it *should* be time, but her daughter is not into it. They are just giving it time because it’s stressing everyone out for no reason.
It will happen

Like others have said, there is no schedule for toilet training; she will know when she is ready.
With my daughter, we tried once with pull-ups, but it didn’t take and eventually we were back in diapers full time.
The second iteration took almost immediately. For us, the impetus to get her to decide to be ready was new “big girl” panties with characters on them (either Disney princesses or Curious George, I forget… but they make Dora too). My wife bought a package and put them in the laundry (obviously… who wears underwear without washing it?!?) and let my daughter see them while she folded.
Her interest was piqued, and she wanted to wear them. My wife explained that she couldn’t wear them until she was ready to use the toilet because they were so much thinner than diapers (I think they actually felt the thickness; if necessary, I think a demonstration using water might help explain this point). She agreed to use the potty in exchange for the panties, and save for a few accidents (mostly us forgetting to remind her), we were fine.
Wow… sorry for the long comment.

I feel your pain! Just getting over the nastiness myself! Try to get some sleep!
The one thing I’ve learned after potty training 3 is you can’t rush it. They will let you know when they’re ready. Pushing it is just not worth the tears and aggravation!

Jaden LOVED to bounce all day too!
Toilet training-not having much luck either. However we did manage to train him at one potty related thing. He now says “Go potty get candy” every time someone walks into the bathroom. I hate potty training.
Have you tried the Elmo Potty Training DVD? This at least got Jaden interested in the potty.
Good Luck!

I’m smack dab in the middle of being sick myself…ugh. I feel for ya, it sucks.
The potty training, I found my kids terrified of the large potty, so we got a little one that was just their size. They loved it. Trust me on that one. Something about that big white monster scared the heck outta them all.
Hope you feel better soon.
Don’t ya love those jolly jumpers? Loved mine!!
Have a good one

Hey: I really wouldn’t get to discouraged about the potty thing. I’ve been trying so hard to train my son Hunter (3in may) and he was TERIFIED of the toilet. Seriously, he woke up one morning and said pee mom. He’s been accident free for 2 weeks now!!! I think they know when they’re ready.

I’m still trying to toilet train my little guy (who will turn 3 at the end of April). Yesterday he went on the potty twice and today zero (so far). I have decided not to pressure him because I think I may have over-did it when he was younger.

Of course she’s scared of that big toilet! I’m still scared of it!
Actually, those little kiddie toilets work wonders. But the KEY is … yeah offering rewards only works if they are getting rewards ONLY when sitting on the potty. (Or doing other reward-worthy things.) Usually they are used to getting some treats and petting and such for doing nothing at all but waking up and breathing.
Takes a few days of concentrated effort. Lots of drinking to encourage lots of peeing and only treats for toilet work.
Unfortunately, most of us can’t block out those days nor that much concentration.

Oh, I hope you feel better soon. It’s never fun to be sick, but it’s 10x worse when you have two kids to run after.
The dreaded potty training!! I guess the only advice I can give is waiting until she’s ready. Oh, and pretty underwear that she can pick out herself. That is huge incentive!! Noah is trained. He was ready, I totally wasn’t! I was like, “no, let’s just wait until Summer,” and Noah was like, “Mommy, I don’t want to wear diapers anymore.” I was a little taken aback because he’s not even 2 1/2, but I guess he was ready. Of course, I am still expecting accidents now and then.
Good luck!

With both girls I didn’t do more than ask if they want to be potty trained…both said no, no, no and one day out of the blue they said yes and that was that. Potty trained. One at 2 years and 5 months (with a 3 month old sister in the house) and the other at 2 years 7 months. No pull ups, no night time anything….paw-tee trained. So keep all your gear on hand and visible and enjoy the fact that you don’t have to struggle with a baby and preschooler in every.single.public.bathroom in every.single.public.place you go to…honestly. Oh and I have started Eat Pray Love…feel like I’m reading a blog! I haven’t gotten into it yet, it always takes me a good 50-70 pages before I do though.

All my kids except the 17-month-old (obviously) were potty trained somewhere between 3 and 3 1/2. I went with the no pressure, they’ll do it when they’re ready route. With the first one, the daycare helped. I was home with the others, so with the second, I just informed her that if she wanted to go to the 3-year-old pre-school class (she did), she had to be going potty on the big girl potty first. She promptly did. Third one, same thing. I think I may have tried at 2 1/2 with the first two kids, but it was a no-go. She’ll do it when she’s ready.

Aw, Haley, feel better! that nasty illness has gone through my house a couple times this year and you have my utter sympathy. I hope sleep is in the cards for you this weekend so you can get better.
And please don’t sweat the potty-learning thing. I promise that if you wait til she is ready, it will be so much easier. I am on number 4 now and she is the fastest and easiest and youngest. The boys were all 3 before they trained. In fact, my third boy was 3 years and one day and then he was trained in about a day.
Don’t worry, it will happen. Sooner than later!

My son has started potty training himself. It’s a wonder. He now refuses to pee in his daiper. All tho, he sometimes just whips it out, and being too lazy to stop what he is doing and rush to the bathroom, pees wherever he happens to be. I have six dead houseplants and I would not advise anyone playing with Molly’s doll house any time soon. *Sigh*

1. Monkey will potty train when she’s ready. Frustrating, maybe, but she will.
2. Careful of the jumpers…you HAVE heard that they can hurt the legs/hips of kids, right?
3. Are you taking care of yourself? Vitamins? You’ve been getting sick a lot – is it just winter, or are you wearing yourself down?
You know I ask because I love ya’…

I’m of the “she’ll let YOU know when she’s ready” school of toilet training. Both of my kids were just over 3. We needed no rewards, no charts, no accident cleanups…just said goodbye to diapers when they were ready.
How can you feel so yucky after all that yoga? Could it be that it released toxins that are now struggling to escape? This happened to me after a mud wrap.

I’m telling you you have to read the toilet training in a day book and Josh needs to do the job not you. You need to take the baby and go.
Oh…and when you train her take her OUT of the diapers and put her in big girl pants. Then stay in the kitchen away from the good furniture. These new diapers are great for preventing diaper rash but terrible for toilet training since they are too comfortable when wet.
Good luck!

I have potty training advice now (even though my daughter is about 60%, sometimes 80% there) and she’s 2 years, 9 months
Three words: Pantless
It works at home. Now we’re just trying to get her to use it outside of the house.
Keep at it! Don’t let her decide when she’s ready, because then she’ll be 14 and still in diapers.
misguided mommy said, March 16th, 2008 at 10:13 am
okay so what you need to do is find a way to make the toilet taboo, then as soon as she can’t have it she will want it!

I love that cat in today’s post.
