Apparently, my family and I have very dirty minds — because very few of you saw why Friday’s Double Bubble comic was HI-LARIOUS….
So, I’ll give you a hint…. What’s funny about that comic? You need to have a VERY DIRTY MIND to get it. If you still don’t get it, you are a saint — or, again, maybe I (and my fam) just have very dirty minds.
In other news….
I’m EXTREMELY happy to introduce to you my new favourite thing in the whole wide world:

How DO I love thee, oh pacifier? Let me count the ways….!
Oh my GARSH, why didn’t I think of this before? How have I gone 3 months whipping out my booooooobie for all to see ALL THE freaking TIME? Honestly? I’ve been gagging at the sight of my own breasts because I’m whipping them out CONSTANTLY. And, there’s been NO glimmer of a routine in sight. It’s boobie or WAHHH (with irresistible quivering, pouting lower lip!). And, I just. can’t. doitanymore.
ALSO, he’s been sucking his l’il hands. The last thing I want is ANOTHER thumb sucker. That cheaty little monkey will be the ONLY thumb sucker in this family if I can help it! Because, trust me — you can take a pacifier out of your kid’s mouth, but you CAN’T take that darn stinking thumb away! Big time orthodontics for the monkey, here we come, FASHIZZLE.
My decision to stick a pacifier INSTEAD OF A BOOBIE in his mouth is probably controversial. But, dude, this…

…is bliss.
And, so is losing 5 more pounds! I celebrate with a picture….

…Unfortunately, losing 5 pounds doesn’t change the fact that I still CANNOT take a good picture.
Only 35 to go! Ugh.

Careful with the pacifier…they’re addictive for kids. And if you decide, at some point, to take it away, you need to be firm and actually do so (when he’s older, I mean). Kids will hang on to it for as long as possible…it’s end up being the same as when monkey used to bring toys to school and freaked about giving them up. Fab pic, by the way! xo

of course…it’s called moose-knuckle…hahaha

There’s nothing wrong with giving a kid a pacifier. You are right in that they are much easier to take away than a thumb is! As long as you take it away at the appropriate age there is nothing wrong with it and it is definitely much better for baby’s teeth than a thumb! Congrats on the 5 pounds and your pic looks great! You and baby both!

I have had numerous dentists tell me that pacifiers are way better than thumbs for the teeth. And your son obviously needs the oral stimulation to calm down–and you need to be able to walk around without him! Now I am not the one to talk to about giving them up. Most kids do it fairly easily. Mine, however, is almost 3 and still has his at bedtime. I have NO willpower!

Oh yah baby! My oldest son’s “sue” saved my life! He had it till he was 4 and it actually helped his teeth (or so the dentist said).
I could NOT get the girls to take one and believe me I tried sooo we had 2 that did the “sue” thing, one who did nothing and one who will be turning 4 in 2 weeks and will still suck her thumb – yikes!
Oh and you look amazing! Don’t worry about the weight (I know easy for me to say. I’m such a hypocrite if you read my blog this week – sorry!)
Mine always came off when I was done breast feeding.
Renee said, January 6th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
at his age he is well enough along that introducing a pacifier is fine…he knows when he’s hungry and when he just needs to suck. And except for the weaning him from it thing you’re all set.
I wouldn’t worry about it though…I’ve never seen a kid go to college still using one.
Still don’t get the cartoon, so must not have a dirty mind. Oh well there are worse crimes in life I suppose.
BTW: LOVE the Pix!!! You’re looking very Awesome!

JMC said, January 6th, 2008 at 8:35 pm
My mind must be dirty too, because the fly on the kid’s pants looks a lot like an erection. That’s why y’all thought it was so funny, right?

You look simply gorg! Your little rascal is such sweetness.
Congrats on the 5 pounds
Go with the soo – both my boys used one and gave it up shortly after year. You can’t put a price on your sanity.
So, is Brit-Brit on Dr. Phil this week after last weeks meltodown?
We had a couples party Friday night and between you and Ali I was full of celeb gossip to fill in any awkward silences…you saved me once again
Lindz said, January 7th, 2008 at 2:01 am
Whatever are you talking about??? That picture is gorg. Also, is it weird that I have no children (YET) and know that those pacifiers are great? Too many friends with babes and I have the fever. God willing I will have my own before the trends change too much.

First of all – amazing picture.
Second of all, I just can’t believe you waited THAT LONG for a soother. I’m bringing mine to the hospital with me. (seriously).
So, here’s just a little soother advice, not that you asked. If he really likes that specific soother, get a ton of them. We had one discontinued on us, and it was HORRIBLE.
Matt loved his, and still does. We have some very strict limits on it. (nap time/bedtime only) But, he was also using me as a soother and it was really hard on me.
Also, invest in a soother clip because then when he drops it it won’t fall on the floor.
SciFi Dad said, January 7th, 2008 at 9:07 am
We avoided the pacifier at first, but caved when the munchkin was diagnosed with acid reflux (sucking helped it). We only used it until about 6 months, when we started making her “cry it out” a bit in the crib (she would spit it out and scream worse, so we just stopped using it).
It’ll be fine. (and OMG is he cute!)
btw: you look fine too… stop being so hard on yourself.

First child was thumb. Second was pacifier. After he was one, he was only given the pacifier when he went to sleep…you never saw a kid want to go to bed so bad! He was like a smoker thinking about a cigarette!
When he was about 2 1/2, the pediatric dentist talked to him very plainly and simply about not using the pacifier. I had one in my bag, so I had him hand it to the doctor and watch her throw it away. It was tough for the first night or two…but much easier than thumb-sucking which I think the first did until she was 7 or 8 at bedtime only.
Jenifer G. said, January 7th, 2008 at 10:40 am
It never occurred to me you were NOT giving him a pacifier…I just assumed he didn’t like it. All of my nursing friends used them with no harm at all. Both my girls used them and gave them up with little (well a bit) of drama and you are right you cannot take a thumb away. He just wants to suck – it is natural.
I wouldn’t worry a bit about it.
Rebecca said, January 7th, 2008 at 11:10 am
I think you look LOVELY, Haley! (and I have to lose 35 pounds too, without the very good reason of a new baby.)
Without a soother, I would have LOST MY MIND with my first two. The Baby wouldn’t take hers… how sad for me.
Kelly said, January 7th, 2008 at 11:17 am
OMG! It really was starring Pud. I am cracking up.
As for the paci, Jackie is totally in love with his. The doc said I should ditch it. I smiled politely, said yes, and thought to myself, NO -insert explitive-way. I know he can’t have it forever, and I hope to make the break by 2, but right now, the binky saves the day and my sanity.
Cyndi said, January 7th, 2008 at 11:40 am
You both look beautiful in that pic! And horay for pacifiers! I tried very hard to get my son to take one and he never would. They are a saving grace!
Tricia said, January 7th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
So glad to hear the soother worked! Controversial, beh. What ever works for you my dear, what ever works, go with it. I was so happy to have one in the hospital when Kara was born. Her sucking instinct was strong. And it’s been good for naptimes and bedtime…by that I mean a life saver. Interesting since her brother wouldn’t take a soother and bedtimes with him were no treat until he was well past a year.

I think pacifiers are the best thing since sliced bread. My youngest adored hers and had to have one in her mouth and one for each hand. She even mastered the art of speaking with one in her mouth.
When she was almost 4, I decided she needed to let the “pacie” go. She had bitten through all of the ones she had, so to her, they were no longer suckable. We were at the grocery store one day and she saw new ones in the baby section. She told me I should buy her some new pacies. I told her I couldn’t because the store wouldn’t let me. She gave me a puzzled look and asked why. I told her that it was against the law for me to buy new pacies for her because she was just too old for them. She still insisted that I should buy them, so I told her if I tried to buy one the store would call the police. She accepted that story and that was the end of the pacie.
Sometimes, you just have to lie.
My daughter is now 17, a senior in high school, with no pacifier and she never needed braces.
Kathryn said, January 7th, 2008 at 1:25 pm
Yeah for 5 more pounds! And yeah for pacies! Thank goodness you are getting a bit of a break of nursing.

Bravo on the weight loss! LOVE the picture you look positively marvelous! (Rascal too but he hears it all the time from you I’m sure!)
I have a confession… I am a terrible mommy. I caved on a similar issue.
Tummy sleeping. I would prop him on his side and he would wake up. I would put him on his back but he would wake up. Finally one night after that 2 am feeding I was just exhausted and gave up and put him on his belly. He went instantly to sleep.
Mind you he was on a very firm mattress in a very warm sleeper with no stuffed animals or pillows, just one extra blanket that did not seem like it could smother him in any way.
I just had to. I was sleep deprived and getting crankier by the day. It was that or lock him in the car for the night and since you can get arrested for that I decided it was worth the chance.
That’s my confession.
Oh…one more:
Today is my birthday number 43! BTW I LOVE being in my 40s! It is way better than being in your 30s! (Well except for the hair I have popping up in odd places…and turning gray…and not just on my head!) Don’t worry it is coming!
So if you read this pop over to my blog and say hello! I put up a great poll today too!

I also wanted to let you know I think you are looking great. We also used a soother with Lucas. My boobs needed a break too.

long live the Paci!!! breastfeeding mom’s life support… you can not be his pacifier, it is just unreasonably impossible… so if he takes to it for comfort and those inbetween times soo be it… Out of 4, I had two who loved the paci, both my girls, my oldest had an impossible time getting rid of it, but she lived… my youngest, ditched it herself at 1 year… I won’t worry about tomarrow.. think I do not have a monkey dangling from my tit, 24 hours a day… think a bit of freedom for yourself.. you are doing a great job, don’t second guess yourself!!! love!
Julie said, January 8th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
I was pretty sure that I had a dirty mind, but I still don’t get the cartoon!!!! What am I missing?!?!?
Don’t worry about the paci, Noah still has his for nap and bedtime and he’s over two. I’m not going to worry about it for a little while yet. It’s his vice!
