Last night I watched a bit of a documentary before bed. I can’t remember what it was called. It was late, and it was disturbing me (and I try to avoid being disturbed before I embark for dreamland), so I only watched a bit of it. The bit that I watched was enough to inspire me to action: “The earth has a fever,” the narrator said…. And, the climatic catastrophes that we’ve endured recently — hurricanes, tsunamis — are symptoms of the Earth’s poor state of health.
When your child has a fever, you do everything you can to make her better, right? Well, the Earth has a fever. What will you do to make her better?
Every single one of us can help heal the Earth by changing a few things, by making less of a mark, using less of the Earth’s energy. I’ve been doing research today, and I’ll share the simplest things you can do (without spending a cent) to help heal the environment. Here they are:
Reduce, reuse, and recycle all plastics, paper, glass, aluminum cans;
Turn off lights, televisions, videos, stereos and computers when you’re not using them;
Plug holes around doors and windows to eliminate drafts, which use up energy;
Make sure your house is well insulated;
Use your washing machine or dishwasher only when it’s full — and use the most energy-efficient cycles;
Don’t leave the water running;
Set your water thermostat at least 2 degrees lower than it’s at (bonus: you will save money);
Keep the fridge door closed when it’s not in use, and let your food cool down fully before putting it in the fridge or freezer;
Turn off your computer screen when you take a break at work;
Save paper (and energy used in paper production) by printing on both sides of the page and by recycling used paper;
Leave the car at home more often;
Bike, walk and/or use public transportation (i.e., the train or bus when traveling longer distances) more often;
Car pool with your work colleagues or friends;
Don’t leave your car running when you’re not driving it;
Plant a tree (okay, this costs a wee bit of money, but Earth needs more trees to absorb the excess carbon dioxide).
- While all this warm, sunny weather feels great to us, it’s bad news. When I left the house this morning, I opened my back door to an unusually warm and sunny winter day. I immediately thought about the polar bears and their imminent extinction. And, I thought sadly about the fever.
The Earth is sick. Help me make her better.

Great, great post Haley. We all need reminders like this every so often!

Was that Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” that you watched? If so, my husband and I watched that FINALLY for the first time a few weeks ago and were absolutely riveted. We live in Ithaca, NY, a very hippie-ish sort of community, so it’s easy for us to sustain ourselves as much as we can, do what’s right for the environment, and really feel like we have support in our efforts.
Good for you!

That’s an awesome post! If everyone did even just a little bit, it would help so much!

Great post. I’m so not an environmentalist – but my friend also posted something – so I will at lesat make a concerted effort to recycle and turn off lights and all of that.
But, seriously today is so figidly cold I’m missing the warmth of the heat.

i have been pretty crazy recycle woman around our house. i figure that’s how i can start. small. i can’t be a huge environmentalist…there’s no way that i’ll turn off my monitor when i take a break…it’s soo not going to happen.
and i hate to say it…and i know that the global warming isn’t good for the environment…but im SURE enjoying the warm weather!

Great list Haley!
Another is — go vegetarian, or at least begin eating more vegetarian meals. It’s astounding how much the animal agriculture industry is harming the earth. But they do it because the demand for animal flesh is so high.

We’re in for the long haul. Cloth diapers, hang clothes to dry, eat low on the food chain, eat local produce wherever possible. Just some of the things we also try to do!

Thanks for the reminder about living responsibly! My 7 year old has taken it upon herself to be the official reminder in our house to TURN OFF THE TAP!

How about trying not to purchase anything that comes in non-recycleable or non-re-useable plastic packaging.

Wow, I’m honestly speechless, Haley. Great post. Thanks for the reminders, we do need them once in a while. It’s interesting, since I have become a SAHM, I have become more conscious about things that I do in the house to save energy. I am trying to teach my daughter these things as I do them so that she grows up just doing these things instinctively, like turning off lights if we leave a room, etc.

Add to the list using energy efficent bulbs. Next time your bulb goes out replace it with an energy efficient one.
Great post, love it when people bring the enviroment to people minds.

My friend just told me about Al Gore’s movie. Is this it? She said Roger Ebert said by not watching it you are punishing your grandkids.
I used to be very earth friendly, now not so much. We recycle and reuse. However I know there is more I could be doing. Thanks for the ideas!

The link between Mind and Social / Environmental-Issues.
The fast-paced, consumerist lifestyle of Industrial Society is causing exponential rise in psychological problems besides destroying the environment. All issues are interlinked. Our Minds cannot be peaceful when attention-spans are down to nanoseconds, microseconds and milliseconds. Our Minds cannot be peaceful if we destroy Nature.
Industrial Society Destroys Mind and Environment.
Subject : In a fast society slow emotions become extinct.
Subject : A thinking mind cannot feel.
Subject : Scientific/ Industrial/ Financial thinking destroys the planet.
Subject : Environment can never be saved as long as cities exist.
Emotion is what we experience during gaps in our thinking.
If there are no gaps there is no emotion.
Today people are thinking all the time and are mistaking thought (words/ language) for emotion.
When society switches-over from physical work (agriculture) to mental work (scientific/ industrial/ financial/ fast visuals/ fast words ) the speed of thinking keeps on accelerating and the gaps between thinking go on decreasing.
There comes a time when there are almost no gaps.
People become incapable of experiencing/ tolerating gaps.
Emotion ends.
Man becomes machine.
A society that speeds up mentally experiences every mental slowing-down as Depression / Anxiety.
A ( travelling )society that speeds up physically experiences every physical slowing-down as Depression / Anxiety.
A society that entertains itself daily experiences every non-entertaining moment as Depression / Anxiety.
FAST VISUALS /WORDS MAKE SLOW EMOTIONS EXTINCT.
SCIENTIFIC /INDUSTRIAL /FINANCIAL THINKING DESTROYS EMOTIONAL CIRCUITS.
A FAST (LARGE) SOCIETY CANNOT FEEL PAIN / REMORSE / EMPATHY.
A FAST (LARGE) SOCIETY WILL ALWAYS BE CRUEL TO ANIMALS/ TREES/ AIR/ WATER/ LAND AND TO ITSELF.

[...] My mom and step-dad are big on saving money where they can. Really, who’s not wanting to save a penny or two? And they recycle; recycle e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g. The Kleenex boxes are broken down and the plastic thingy that hold the tissue is even ripped out. It’s something they are proud of and take rather seriously. I don’t blame them really; it’s excellent practice and I wish that more people (myself included) were so diligent. Even though I was scolded and forced to pull something recyclable out of the garbage and into the corresponding receptacle – disgusting – I still pick and choose what I feel like recycling. I know, Haley-O is on the verge of a heart attack this very moment. [...]

I’ve personally dealt with anxiety attacks my whole life. It started when I was just a child and I’ve had to cope with them since then. I found a solution that has helped me get them done once and for all. I will tell you that it wasn’t quick or easy, but after a while I was able to finally get rid of them. I’ve finally got rid of them and its like I’ve started a new life not having panic attacks. I also saw a Dr. Oz special a few days ago, sometimes it isn’t a panic attack that is the root of the problem, I’d also recommend talking to your doctor. Best of luck!
