Just call me Queen of Musicals (well, don’t…)! I didn’t realize how many musicals I’ve been to until I considered doing a Thursday Thirteen about it! Here are thirteen of them in no particular order:
1. RENT, Toronto

2. BLOOD BROTHERS, London, England

3. CATS, Toronto

4. THE LION KING, Toronto

5. MAMMA MIA!, Toronto

6. JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOUR DREAMCOAT, Toronto

7. LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, Toronto

8. TOMMY, Toronto

9. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, Toronto

10. CABARET, New York

11. WICKED, Toronto

12. THE PRODUCERS, Toronto

13. LES MISÉRABLES, Toronto

Have you been to some of these? What musicals have you been to?

I haven’t been to quite as many musicals as you have, but I do so love them, and I definately have watched lots of them on video. They always put me in a happy mood!
My TT is up!

I have seen #3, #4, and #9. I totally did not get “Cats” at first. It did not make sense until I realized that each song was about a different cat. It was not a “story” like the other musicals!
I want to take my son to see #6. I have seen a high school version of it, and my son has the DVD. He loves it! I cannot wait to take him to see the real thing.

That’s a lot of musicals. Does it count that I’ve seen RENT 13 times?! Also, Fame, Aida (3x), Mamma Mia, Lion King, Cabaret, Chicago, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Movin’ Out, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Mister (a bad off-off-broadway show)

I once knew an actress who worked in the day at a company I used to work out who was the girl in BLOOD BROTHERS. She played along david cassidy and bro. My fave musical I’ve seen still was SUNSET BLVD with Glenn Close. IT WAS FAB PRODUCTION VALUE!

Oh, God! I feel like such a dork….of course I remember seeing Mama Mia….I liked it the best out of all of the ones I have seen. I made this post while Jess was running around like a mad woman with a dirty diaper, so I had to run….thanks for the correction, J.!

Did you like Wicked? I ask because I hated the book and am wondering if I would like the musical.
SpeakEasy said, October 26th, 2006 at 5:14 pm
Great List, Hales, got me thinking. Here is my list, but I’m sure there are a few missing. I’ve seen more than I thought…
Les Mis
Crazy about you
Phantom
Mamma Mia (and I hate Abba but loved the show)
Lion King
Diary of Anne Frank (not a musical but played at Stratford and where I met and fell for UrbanMummy)
Producers
When in NY visiting family we say a show on Broadway starring John Ritter – about a year before he died. It was great. Narrated by someone famous too, but I cannot remember who.

WEll, I don’t live in Toronto, London or New York so I haven’t been able to see too many musicals, though I’ve been to a few locally produced ones. and a few ballets too which are like musicals with no dialogue!
Jenn said, October 26th, 2006 at 5:33 pm
I love musicals. I’ve never been to any big live. Most of what I’ve seen live was travelling and highschool groups.
s@m said, October 26th, 2006 at 7:06 pm
I’d say that’s a few! LOL
There are so many on that list that I’ve wanted to see. Apparently I haven’t come up with a good enough bribe to get my husband to go, LOL!

Wow! I’m jealous! I’ve only seen Phantom twice and Les Miserables! both in NYC. Now I live in Florida so I don’t even know when I’ll get to see another musical!!
Michael said, October 27th, 2006 at 12:44 pm
Been to 7 of yor 13, love them too. I have always had Les Mis as my fav and dreamed of performing Valjean (ValTool). Rent is a close 2nd and we saw and loved Wicked this spring. I had read the novel and heard the cast reecording, so some changes were pleasant surprises, especially the ending!

You know I was a drama major my first time around in college- but I hated theater. I still do…. tooo dramatic for me… my serious acting skills are limited the long thougtful gaze that is the skill only a trained soap actor can master….

I’m just catching up on your blog today and well, I couldn’t resist commenting on this post (even though it was written weeks ago!) since I’m sure I could rival you for title of “Queen of the musicals” I had to note that there is one that you must see that is not on your list but at the top of mine which I can only assume means that you have not seen it!
EVIL DEAD THE MUSICAL. Premiered in Toronto, currently playing in New York. If you haven’t seen it you must. Cats… phooie, Phantom, whatever! EVIL DEAD THE MUSICAL. Now that’s where it’s at! http://www.evildeadthemusical.com

[...] And, one more thing. YUGE fan of musicals that I am (see here), I CANNOT wait to see this production because…guess who the director/choreographer is? Give up? MATTHEW BOURNE. AKA THE Matthew Bourne. AKA the only British director EVAH to win the Tony Award for Best Director AND Best Choreographer of a Musical (1999). AND, devoted ballet lover that I am, I HAVE to remind you that this five-time Olivier award-winner also created Swan Lake, the world’s longest running ballet production. And, finally, just recently, the dude won London’s Olivier Award for his work on Disney’s Mary Poppins, which has since opened on Broadway. LOVE! Can you tell I’m excited!? And, it takes a whole lot to make me excited about anything these days. [...]
